Well-known Milton star, Boston business executive and philanthropist Jack Shaughnessy Sr. will receive a Doctor of Business Administration degree from Stonehill College at its graduation ceremonies Sunday, May 18.

Matt Duffy, the slugging University of Vermont shortstop who has a .544 batting average to lead the team in hitting, last week was named the university’s Student Athlete of the Week.

Mark Gormley, who was a key factor in Milton Legion’s winning the Eastern Regional Legion championship three years ago and who won a game in the Legion World Series, is now pitching for Brown University where he is a sophomore. At this writing, he is 3-1.

Milton lacrosse star Liz O’Donnell has been elected a tri-captain of next year’s Colby-Sawyer College lacrosse team. The college is located in New Hampshire.

As of April 10, the Endicott College girls’ softball team is 17-3. Leading the team are two girls very familiar to Milton softball fans. Sophomore pitcher Jen Bortolotti is 9-1 and junior shortshop Jen Lazar is fielding and hitting just great.

For you athletes who have not seen the new Milton Library yet, you should drop by there sometime soon. It is a first-class facility.

Although Curry College dropped men’s lacrosse this year (after playing about a third of a season), the college does expect to have it next year.

Baseball and softball, at least for now, have survived at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The university, however, has cut men’s and women’s skiing due to budget cuts.

Northeastern University men’s hockey coach Greg Cronin got the Coach of the Year award in Hockey East. This award is named after former Milton High star and University of New Hampshire coach Bob Kullen, who died a few years back.

Moving back to Milton after 14 years in Duxbury is Martha Cadigan, a longtime Milton star. A lot of you older Milton stars remember her husband, who was instrumental in getting Little League started in town and was a league manager for many years. Mrs. Cadigan’s nephew, also named Tom, is now a Little League manager.

After working as assistant director of the Boston Marathon again this year, well-known Milton athlete Josh Nemzer will run the course with some of his friends after the race is finished.

Last chance now to get in your applications for this year’s Milton High Hall of Fame. They must be in by May 1. The forms can be picked up in any of the public schools. They are good for five years and the form has been simplified.

The Milton Parks and Recreation Department has a one-day trip to Foxwoods that you might be able to join. It is Friday, April 24, departing from the Council on Aging at 8 a.m. and returning at 6 p.m. The cost is $30, which includes Keno tickets and a buffet. The New England Revolution, who are off to a good start this year with two wins and a tie, are at D.C. United on Friday, April 17, at 7 p.m. The game is on ESPN2. The team’s next home game is Sunday, May 3, at 3 p.m. against Houston.

The Wachusett Reservoir is now open for fishing. You can fish at the shore from dawn to dusk.
The Quabbin Reservoir will open for fishing on Saturday, April 18. You can fish by boat at Quabbin, where there are good launching areas in New Salem, Belchertown and Hardwick.

A lot of you older Milton athletes know the Rev. Richard Crowley, of the sports-playing Crowleys, one of three priests in his family. Well, did you know that he has a little band that plays down in the Middleborough area? He is the pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Middleborough. The name of the band is Father Crowley and the Off Beats. Give him a ring and he can tell you where is he is playing or help you book the band for a function.

Keep your eye on this 12-year-old hockey star. Juliann Landry was the goalie on the girls’ 12-and-under AAU hockey team that won the national championship two weeks ago in Buffalo, N.Y. Her father is well-known baseball star and manager Skip Landry, from a few years back, and her grandfather is former Milton Park Commissioner and weightlifter John Landry.

Milton tennis player Tim Leveroni is once again playing tennis for Suffolk University where he is in his senior year. He is a graduate of Cushing Academy.

Kate O’Neill, the former Milton High and Yale University star, says she feels very well as she prepares for the London Marathon, which will be held the last weekend of this month. Kate’s last marathon was just a year ago in Boston in the qualifier for the Olympic team, and she was forced to drop out with an ankle injury at the 21-mile mark.

John Canty, sophomore lacrosse star at UMass Boston, who was honored as Star of the Week two weeks ago, has switched positions from attacker to midfield.

Boston College will hold its annual spring football game on Saturday, April 25, at 1 p.m. at the Heights. Admission is free for this inter-squad game.

Our congratulations to Milton High basketball captain and star Marcus McDermott for making the Boston Herald’s All-Scholastic team. Marcus plans to attend Babson, Providence, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst or Northeastern in the fall.

Milton High School lacrosse player Brittany O’Rourke opened the season with a bang, scoring five goals as her team beat Brookline. Her 111 goals in four years has set a new Milton High scoring record. And, of course, she increases this number every time she scores a goal.

Well-known sportswriter and golfer Jim McCabe has retired from The Boston Globe. He will, however, continue to write for Golf Magazine.

In a very nice gesture, attorney, real estate man and Little League Baseball enthusiast Tim Corcoran ran a very successful St. Patrick’s Day party at The Common Market in West Quincy, with all proceeds going to Milton High sports.

We agree that Maryland came on strong at the end of the season, but not enough to earn a spot in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Boston College, with Media Director Chris Cameron heading it up, did a nice job as host team of the NCAA East Regional finals.

Even though he denies it and says he is staying at Louisville, it is thought by many that former Providence (and Boston Celtics) coach Rick Pitino will be Arizona’s coach next year.

Former Boston Red Sox outfielder David Murphy, who was traded by the Sox to the Texas Rangers two years ago, is looking for an injury-free season this year.

Never think that Division 1 college football isn’t a big business. Florida State already has its fall media guide out and it states that the university had had 100 of its players picked in the NFL draft since 1993, the most of any school. It is also tied with Michigan for the most bowl-game appearances since 1985, with 26 each.
